How to Apply Temporary Tattoos: A Beginner’s Guide

How to Apply Temporary Tattoos

A first-time guide to herbal and matte tattoos

Found a design you love? This guide explains how to prepare your skin, approach application and care for your Superinklab temporary tattoo.

Applying a Superinklab temporary tattoo

Illustrative application photo. Follow the instructions supplied with your specific product.

1. Know which type you are using

Herbal Temporary Tattoos: color develops in the outer layer of the skin over 24-48 hours. Once developed, the stain is hard to wipe off. Decide on the position before you apply.

Matte Temporary Tattoos: an adhesive layer holds the design on the skin surface. The design is visible after application. Hot water can loosen the adhesive and make it more likely to come off.

2. Prepare your skin and supplies

Check the placement. Hold the design against your chosen area and check its size and orientation in a mirror. Pick a spot you can easily reach. Avoid irritated or broken skin and areas with constant rubbing.

Clean and dry. Remove sweat and surface oils, then dry the area thoroughly. Avoid applying lotion or oil to that spot before application.

Read the instructions first. Keep the tattoo and its product instructions nearby. If your product requires wet application, prepare clean water and a clean damp cloth or sponge.

3. Apply carefully, step by step

Herbal and matte products may use different application methods. Follow the instructions for your specific tattoo, including any required contact time.

Step 1 / Prepare the protective layer

Identify which side should touch your skin. Remove the protective layer specified in the instructions. Product structures may differ, so check before peeling.

Step 2 / Position and hold it steady

Align the design with your chosen spot and keep the skin-contact side flat against your skin. Avoid shifting it back and forth once positioned, as this may affect the transfer.

Step 3 / Complete the required application

Follow the pressing, wetting or other steps stated on the packaging. Do not assume herbal and matte tattoos need the same application time. If wetting is required, moisten the backing evenly. Do not lift it early to check the result.

Step 4 / Remove the backing as directed

When application is complete, carefully remove the backing or carrier as instructed. Keep the skin and design steady, and avoid immediate rubbing, wiping or repeated friction from clothing.

4. Care for your tattoo after application

Herbal / Allow 24-48 hours for development

The design may look faint immediately after application. This is not the final result. Superinklab herbal tattoos gradually develop over 24-48 hours. Apply 1-2 days before an event if you want to show the developed design.

During development, follow the product instructions on water contact, friction and contact with other skin areas. Do not immediately apply another tattoo over the same spot just because the color looks light.

Matte / Avoid prolonged hot-water exposure

The design is visible after application, but follow the instructions to let the surface layer dry and settle. Ordinary water contact does not mean it will simply fall off. Hot water is more likely to loosen the adhesive and cause the design to come off.

To help preserve the design, avoid prolonged hot-water rinsing over the area and vigorous scrubbing with a towel or bath sponge.

5. First-time questions, answered

Why is my herbal tattoo so light?

Check how long it has been since application. Within the first 24-48 hours, the color may still be developing. Wait for the full development period before judging the result. If it still does not develop as expected, take a photo and contact customer support with details of how you applied it.

Why is part of the design missing?

Possible reasons include surface oils, uneven contact, movement during application or not completing the required steps. Next time, start with clean, dry skin, hold the tattoo steady and follow the full product instructions.

Can I wipe it off if I chose the wrong spot?

Herbal: once developed, the stain is hard to wipe off and usually needs time to fade. Avoid repeated hard scrubbing to force it off.

Matte: the surface layer is generally easier to remove and replace. Follow the removal instructions for your specific product.
